I think what's happened in OUR democracy is that people are no longer elected because of their "intellect" and "wisdom" but rather for how much they fit very specific "profiles".

Peter, I think I may have liked John McCain more than you did.

I liked him because I thought he was a wise man and a no nonsense man but I get the feeling that he didn't meet your criteria because he wasn't TOTALLY in favor of every position that you liked.

I've said in the past that I'd like to go back to the times of the "smoke filled rooms" for picking candidates rather than this, "what can you offer ME" times of primary chaos.

I think Iraq is a good example of the deficits of democracy. The Neo-cons thought that we could throw out Saddam and then that whole country would love us and we could just PICK their next president and everything would be wonderful. They never considered how the Sunnis would feel about this and how the Shiites might have thier OWN ideas about who they might want as their leader.

The trouble with Democracy is that you CAN'T control it.
