I already have an excellent insurance plan and plenty of assets accumulated over 30 years of work. I appreciate the fact that the present system leaves people like me two steps from being being in a large size risk pool through my employer with good insurance to being sick unemployed and being in a risk pool as an individual with a pre existing condition. Unless you are vested in paid employer medical insurance or already on Medicare I doubt your health care coverage is any better than mine. I tend to think tying insurance to employment is a problem. I would much rather see a market based solution where insurance companies had to compete across the whole nation with similar basic programs. Everyone has to buy insurance and there are no exclusions for preexisting conditions. I dont know too much about how Germany manages it but it seems like a good one to follow.
