Precisely.

I wonder why so few people get that. I've had lots of discussions on SI about it. I've never been able to get anyone to see it who didn't already. Nor have I ever seen an argument that came close to disabusing me of the notion that a lower standard of living is inevitable, maybe even civil unrest.

BTW, this week I scheduled some elective surgery. Haven't had surgery in ages nor have I paid much attention to the cost of surgeries I had. This surgery may or may not be covered by insurance so my attention was required. I was stunned by how little it cost. The price of 2 1/2 hours' use of an operating room at an excellent hospital is only $800. Likewise the other costs seemed very reasonable, so reasonable that I'm considering skipping the hassle of engaging my insurance company over them.

All of which gives me a different perspective on some of these cost figures that have been bandied about by demagogues. The $30, 40, 50K that was famously attributed to amputating a foot clearly was ridiculous hyperbole.
