"I believe there is a way to work with the present employer-based system to guarantee that all Americans have choices"

He was doing fine up 'til there. The way to provide choice is to decouple health insurance from employment and let everyone do their own thing. He's trying to stick a square peg in a round hole.

most large corp health plans offer alternatives. hmo ppo etc they have fixed benefit amount. insurance companies usually bid for the business. the insurance company process claims based on corp guideline contract. insurance incentives above process fees are to cut medical costs.. convert you to generic medications, live style literature, health programs on line, gatekeeper to monitor your progress when sick etc.

what we need is cap on long term illness expense for out of pocket and if you work for large corp they are usually generous in this area. i myself had maxed out twice during my working years and the corp immediately restated the coverage with max again.

we need to be able to transfer existing problems without rejection by another company. i for years never left to because i knew i would never have my wife qualify for insurance under family coverage.

clean up the waste and corruption.
