To be anti-capitalist is to be against human nature - understandable, but futile. Capitalism certainly isn't going away, and I wouldn't want it to. At my age neat, simple answers have lost their appeal, not that they ever had much. History shows that human affairs are inherently unstable, something to do with the nature of the beast, so any utopian expectations are bound to be disappointed. It seems obvious that we have to take account of both the profit motive and our ethical concerns about the welfare of people who have limited possibilities in life, whether for genetic or for circumstantial reasons. In other words, nobody should have too much or too little power.

I have always thought that a well-educated populace is a necessary condition for a well-functioning society. But I am forced to accept that the appetite for knowledge is highly variable among humans, and many people seem actively to spurn it. Demagogues and false prophets will continue to find a following, sometimes to the level of being able to have a significant influence on the course of events. Will it ever change?
