There are penalties for each incident of reporting an incorrect SSN, and while small (only $50 per incident), it can turn into a lot of money. More importantly, failing to have other associated documentation can result in very large fines. Most employers now take the requirement pretty seriously -- or when I last practiced as a CPA 10 years ago they did.
