I'm also a former trapper---grandfather and father made it a part of their normal income for many years. The fur buyers regularly stopped at the house. As a kid I was used to scrapping and stretching hides. Later I trapped fox for the $5 bounty when fur prices were down.

I never worked in a kraft plant but did install a linerboard machine for Owens-Illinois. Kraft paper is IMHO a much preferred use of recycled fiber. Softness, absorbency etc are not considerations.

I'm so far removed from the paper industry that I have no opinion of excess capacity but suspect it is true. I do know that many of the older, smaller less efficient lines have been decommissioned over the years and that there are always marginally profitable mills that will follow.

It is interesting to note that those who scream the loudest about harvesting forest crops know the least.
