The answer to all this nuclear nonsense is MAD. I don't care how insane Ahmanutjob is, the Iranians have as keen a sense of self-preservation as anyone else. They are not about to go Jihading with nuclear weapons all over the world if it means that they'll get destroyed in the process.

Which still leaves open the question. Why develop nukes? They are worthless as offensive weapons because no one dares use them. Certainly the Iranians will never give them to terrorists because to do so is suicidal.

The answer is that (1) they deter nuclear or conventional attacks very effectively and (2) they can be used to protect adventures, i.e., Iran's theoretical invasion of, say, Saudi Arabia or Iraq. The mere threat that they'll use nukes if they are stopped or challenged may well be sufficient to preclude resistance.

They also are good status symbols. Look for the primping, insecure Brazilians to start working on them, too. Honduras needs to be taught a lesson. Drop a Big One on the pesky Hondurans and their silly idea that they are entitled to manage their own affairs.
