A moderate is helpless in the face of what is happening. It's not in a moderate's nature to picket, shout, argue, which leaves the extremists in charge of the party, and that's a shame.

Even the moderates and relatively moderate conservatives who tried to stand up and push back just faded into the background, since Beck et al are screaming into their microphones for hours and hours every day.

And with our politics shaped more and more by screaming and ranting, we'll get more and more of the policy outcomes that process produces.

It's no different than the schools where illicit prayers are being said in class, or some teacher ill advisedly preaches to his or her students or tries to convert them. We all know that kind of stuff goes on, but trying to draw some large message from incidents like that is stupid.

Shouting at extremists though is a losing proposition. They LIKE shouting, that's why they are extremists. There is not much a moderate can do except enjoy life, and thank your lucky stars you are not wasting your time being miserable and angry, and spending your life on sound and fury which signifies nothing.

>>Last night Hannity was showing the clip, and this morning Glenn Beck is on a tirade (I thought I turned on our classical FM station but it turned out to be AM- hence Beck) about a second school, this one is SC I think, that apparently sang a praise song to Obama.<<

Rambi -

I've seen the clip of the North Carolina kids singing about Obama. They do talk about how "change has come" and the mention hope a lot. Then they get into some seriously socialist stuff like how education is key, and staying in school and working hard will enable them to help America become a better place.

Here's the link:

Not so terribly radical or liberal, if you ask me. But I don't see why schoolchildren have to sing about the President. It does strike me as a kind of political indoctrination, even if they are sticking to completely non-controversial ideas. I'm not sure I'm completely comfortable with that in a public school setting. But at least it wasn't required by the federal government.

I will say that when I was a child, we often had very pro-President messages being sent within the schools I attended, from Eisenhower through Nixon.

I have attended school presentations at my girlfriend's daughter's private school, and they talk about similar stuff, though without mentioning the President. They do mention God, however.

I agree with you...

Children singing reminds me of various authoritarian regimes lining up the kids to sing "O Fearless Leader" or some such tripe. It nauseates me.

When we went to China in 1988 they did something like this for the American tourists. They were keen on showing how squeaky clean the kids and schools were. This kind of manipulation really bugs me... I sure as heck don't want it here and neither Party should be doing, condoning or orchestrating it, whether I'm philosophically aligned with them or not.
