RW, from Brooks' column,

> The rise of Beck, Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and the rest has correlated almost perfectly with the decline of the G.O.P. But it’s not because the talk jocks have real power. It’s because they have illusory power, because Republicans hear the media mythology and fall for it every time.

Brooks is talking out of his ass, ironically contributing to the mythology he's talking about.

Conservative talk radio and TV shows have been around for quite a long time. They didn't cause the decline of the GOP. Their profile rose because the GOP declined and no one else stepped up to take the reins.

Their profile started to grow under Bush. The more corrupt Bush got the more their impact increased. Now they are all the Rs have left since Bush et al imploded.

Their profile rose because only the outrageous attracts attention in our cacophony of a society. If you've listened to Rush for a while you know he gets more crazy with his claims every day.

But Brooks is right... attracting attention doesn't translate to the voting booth. These guys are sucking the Republican party dry; putting them to the right of notorious nuts like the John Birch Society. Average people are NOT GOING TO EAT THIS dog food. If the goal of the Reps is to make Rush et al rich and not get elected it's a great strategy.

It's not just bad for the Reps, it's bad for the country.

Says a daily Rush listener, total fan and buttboy dittohead.

The saddest thing of all is that in a New York Times context Brooks is a conservative.
