When all you rugged individualists are done patting each other on the back, anyone care to make a list of all the things we do collectively, yes through government, that make your success possible?

I don't agree that "life's experience" is such a huge determining factor.... not in America.

I have to disagree. If, like i-node, you have family who are self-employed then going into business seems natural. If everyone you know works for wages or salary, particularly if they all hate "the man," the notion of going into business is alien and scary. Going into business for oneself requires a support network. Sure, you can build a network if somehow you get the itch to start a business, but getting that itch and the confidence to pursue it despite the risk seems unlikely to me.

You didn't get sold on any dreamy egalitarian ideals.

I started out with them. I still have them in a way. But analysis and experience have disabused me of the notion that they can be imposed in a command and control system. Equality is best achieved by individual bootstraps and the opportunities of a vital environment. Government serves that best by fostering opportunities and regulating those practices, such as monopolies and discrimination, that cramp opportunities.
