The lesson to be learned here is you don't hold a robber, you kill him. Then the only person left to talk to the police is the homeowner and you let the dispatcher know that. Then set your gun on the kitchen table unloaded and go sit on the front doorstep and wait for one of the morons in blue to show up.

That's why I don't see much of a role for SWAT teams. They bust down too many doors getting to the occasional bad guy.
