I think it is important to get in the mindset of the founding fathers when talking about democracies and republics. The founding fathers were not thrilled with the idea of pure democracy since they believed in the idea of a tyranny of the masses. The Constitutional Republic was designed to avoid this, so I think it is important to make the distinction.
