Al Gore Advised Google About 'Search Quality'

By Noel Sheppard (Bio | Archive)
October 15, 2009 - 21:53 ET

Former Vice President Al Gore a few years ago advised Internet behemoth Google about "aspects of search quality."

Such was reported by the New Yorker in its October 12 issue (subscription required).

By themselves, the following paragraphs from this 6500-word piece don't mean much.

However, given the ongoing concerns about Google's political leanings and how its search algorithms might be manipulated to favor liberal news outlets over conservative points of view, the very idea that Gore might have had any input to this process is worrisome to say the least:

...

Al Gore recounted a conversation he had with [co-founder Sergey] Brin and [co-founder Larry] Page several years ago in the conference room near their office. Gore raised specific concerns about aspects of search quality. "They had to go to another meeting," Gore recalled, "and said, 'If you can stay, Al, we'd like to bring in the search-quality researchers and specialists in charge of this part of the business.' Ten of them came in. Larry and Sergey left. I spent another three hours. And then, when it was over, I gave Larry and Sergey an oral report."

Some weeks later, Gore said, laughing, "I went up to their office and found that all ten of these people had been moved in. All ten of them!" He described how Page and Brin had had to cram twelve computer monitors into their office, and "move around some of their toys-a remote-control helicopter, flying messenger boards . . ." The researchers and specialists stayed-until Brin and Page "satisfied themselves that they had an ongoing system for maintaining hyper-vigilance." He added, "I defy you to think of any other executives in the world who would bring a team like that into their personal office for weeks on end."

Wow, I just looked and yes, indeed, the "centrists" are agreeing THERE IS NO LEFT in the US anymore. This is hilarious.

..there is absolutely no serious lefty stuff in the US right now. None. Zip. Just four guys/gals in a phone booth on the upper west side in Manhattan. Well, four more in another phone booth in Berkeley. And four more in yet another phone booth in Cambridge. And yet four more in another phone booth in Madison. Well, you get the point.

No movement. Zip. Nada.

Not happening on the left right now.

They simply have no serious public presence in politics right now. I don't see any in the senate.
.....
Nor do I wish to argue there are no serious, non wacko lefties in the country. I know a few; you probably know a few; Wharfie most likely knows a few; Sam types as if he does; Win seems to. But isolated individuals are not a movement, not even a collectivity.

So the serious further left is not around in American politics best I can tell.

How far left do you have to be find no one (except four guys here or there) on your left?

Nah, no left in this country - oh sure, we have guys IN GOVERNMENT who call themselves communist, who call Mao one of their favorite philosphers, who think Hugo Chavez knows how to run a country's media, who want to "queer" elementary schools (promote homosexuality in elementary schools - whats wrong with that?), who had to resign from the SOCIALIST INTERNATIONAL to take her current job, ..... and so on. But those aren't lefties, nah.

John M and Wharfie are parodying that thread better than any of us can do.

What did you expect? They consider themselves "centrists", yet their politics places them to the left of Mr. Treachery, John Kerry.

With a LWE world view that far removed from reality how could they ever imagine an "extreme" left POV? To them that stuff is all mainstream.
