I'm an unabashed right-leaner

You also claim to be one who appreciates the meaning of words. I don't care how far right you are, the word, "treason," has a meaning just as "lie" has a meaning. Liberals may be wrong-headed but that's not the same thing as being traitors. Check your dictionary. Taking the country on a path that you believe will have no favorable end is not the same as aiding a foreign enemy in overthrowing the government. You'd be hard pressed to come up with many examples of liberals even approaching engagement in actual treason.

But you're very much a middle-of-the-road kind of guy.

I'm not remotely middle of the road, ideologically. What I am is practical and reasonable. Reason is necessary if you're going to do what's smart. When your brain shorts out, you are doomed. Partisans on both sides demonstrate extraordinary cognitive disfunction. If you really think that only one side is "highly uninformed," then you flirting with the thrall, yourself.

As for practical, I function pragmatically because I fancy myself a problem solver and a constructive member of society. I learned a a long time ago in the workplace that you have to choose between being right and being effective. I chose effective. If you are effective, then you have an opportunity to implement what you believe to be right. If you are not effective, you can only whine and stew while the idiots run things into the ground. The same goes for stewardship of the country.

I've mentioned my "whither conservatism" file before. I have a great interest in how the battle plays out between the constructive and the non-constructive. If you are a conservative, you have to pick a way to play. IMO, if I were to use the word, "traitor," in your context, then the traitors would be those conservatives who would make conservatives a permanent minority by insisting on ideological purity just as much as the liberals, maybe more so because they are squandering their superior ideology. Either way--following the liberals or the minority-bound conservatives ends you up on the wrong path.

In any event, choosing to be effective is not the same thing as being ideologically middle of the road. There may be some overlap but they are different notions.
