No, trading shouldn't halt. What should happen is that those who are short will be forced by the MMs, either directly or through brokers, to buy shares on the open market in order to meet DTC's demand on the MMs. If we have the only real shares in cert form we can hold them till the bid price reaches what we are willing to accept. I know what I am willing to accept, and it isn't anywhere near the current price.

Candlestick..I would suggest you take a serious look at the variety of futures markets before you say that. You go long and sell short everything from smog futures to river barge expenses. All predicated on the possibility that they might or might not exist versus the cash market.

Candle, You buy a share for $X, but never request your certificate. You're betting the value of the share will increase before you sell. Since you never requested your certificate, it is in street name somewhere and can be shorted. Since your share is in street name, one can play off it, shorting it, betting the value will decrease. If you sell your share and the value increased, the 'short' must cover. If the short sees your share value decrease , and the certificate is in street name, he can cover. If the short doesn't cover when the share price increases and you redeem the share, the MM who shorted the share is responsible., Pugs

Candlestick,
Halting trading is a distinct possibility, but nothing will come of it. You can't sell when trading is halted. Sooner or later the shorts, mm's or brokerage houses will have to pay up.
