>> The stimulus helped save jobs... a good thing.

When the government spends $100 Billion or $800 Billion, surely, a few people are going to have jobs for a period of time. I don't think anyone questions that.

But what is being questioned by economists is whether there is sufficient value in putting a few people to work as government employees -- which is what has happened -- to overcome the long-term negative consequences of adding a trillion dollars to our national debt.

There is no evidence, whatsoever, that the stimulus bill has helped the economy one iota. A strong argument can be made that the economy has recovered some, but not as a result of the stimulus. In fact, it has recovered in much the same way that WWII (not massive government spending) brought about the end of the Great Depression -- when Obama took office there was a period of hope and expectation that instilled a bit of consumer confidence that was absent with the pounding Bush took. All of us were hopeful that Obama would take us in a positive direction.

There isn't a shred of evidence to suggest the porkulus bill made any real difference. Some temporary government employment, sure. But the kind of meaningful work that reinvigorates a shaken economy? Where is the evidence?

RW, > It's like arguing if Bush saved us from a terror attacks after 9/11... you can't prove a negative.

That's right, but then you contradict yourself in the next sentence ...

> But among the insiders that were at the heart of this thing, the absolute opinion is that we were headed for disaster...

There is no "absolute opinion" on this, except when liberals declare "consensus" when there is none.

Or in your case, you make declarations and pass them off as "fact," even when faced with real quantitative numbers that show that the size of the "stimulus" was anything but significant. Political acts made for sound bites (e.g. "Cash for clunkers") do not count.
