It ain't just bullets Ed. It's creating some semblance of an alternative future for the children of those Muslim regions. Look at Turkey.. It's a secular state where Islam is the largest religion. It took some very draconian measures by Ataturk and his military to keep the clerics from subverting that democracy, but it exists and it has maintained relative stability over the decades. It's the best evidence, to date, that Islam doesn't have to be militant, nor does it have to exclude western ideas and values. But you know it took some serious "head bashing" by the Turkish military over those initial years to ensure that militant Islam (or the Caliphate) wasn't revived. Buddy, this battle is going to require that we foster a civil war within Islam between moderates and militants. And that's going to mean taking the battle into their "home turf" and not just wait until they are organized and prepared enough to confront us head-on (likely with large scale WMDs by terrorist groups sheltered by regimes with militaries too organized and powerful enough to make us think twice about going to total war (think Pakistan or Egypt). Man.. I just don't want to see us wait until we have no choice but to face the problem. Churchill was warning the world about Hitler years before anyone truly recognized the threat he posed. And Hitler's ideas have no where the international resonance that Militant Islam has. Hitler spoke to Germans, whereas the Islamic militants are speaking to over a 1 Billion Muslims living in various countries. That scares the hell out of me, and it should scare the hell out of you buddy and yourself. Again, there are a lot of different tactics that can be applied to different scenarios. But they all eventually have to include democratic reform because that's the only way to keep governments from going to war without the support of the people. And when the people support such a war, then it opens a huge doorway to how we deal with the situation, if only because it's pretty hard for their people to deny their involvement in the "dirty deed" their government initiates.
