>It's only in recent centuries that trade has become the norm internationally>

Trade has been going on for 3000 years internationally. The conquerors followed the trade routes that bridged major river valleys. Follow the path from Egypt to Rome to Greece (Christianity spread along that route) to Alexander's route to India (follow Islam along that route), to Alexander's counterpart Maurya's kingdom all the way to Calcutta and then further to Indonesia and Cambodia (where Hinduism had spread and later Islam). Also the other branch along silk route through China to Japan (follow Buddhism from India to Japan).
