That location is adjacent to Yosemite Nat'l Park and the scenery is just as spectacular. While I was there, the base commander learned I was a surveyor and asked if I could help him locate the boundaries of the base. Telling him I could do that, he provided horses and had the mess hall prepare huge lunches for us. We would go out several times a week for the entire day. We rode all over that incredible area. While we did locate the boundaries of the base, I really think the colonel just wanted an excuse to "get out of Dodge". All that was fine with me, as a PFC, traveling with a full colonel got me lots of privileges.
