but historically we haven't. there is no reason to think that will change. if we care about one, we care about all. do we care about the one next door more than the one far away? perhaps there is a more immediate feeling for the one next door, but neither is more worthy, are they? and besides... it won't happen the way we are. talk of 'we can't afford those people far away because of people here' is pretty much bs. the people close to home are a cover to simply do nothing, otherwise why have there always been so many hungry in this country? so many homeless, including veterans? so many going without a chance to see a doctor when ill?
people can give any reason they want to say get out of Afghanistan, but to say it is because 'they' don't want us there goes against the opinion polls of the people there. and to say it is because money is better spent here is bs when our schools have been failing farther for decades, far longer than any war and nothing to do with any war, when people have been hungry far before any war, and all of that. we don't have high speed rail, and we had all that time between vietnam and iraq to do it. but nah.

people should say "I don't give a fak about those people" and be done with it. but as their neighbor, a neighbor who does not have healthcare, I know they feel the same about me. let's stop pretending. I think the word is 'callous' or to put it another way "I dun give a fak".

americans don't want to pay for anything. that's why they buy clothes made by children in sweatshops in china.

Tejek - I think you realize how easy it would be to flip a majority of Americans into bombing Iran? oh, wait, a majority already do support that. oh, but we need out of Afghanistan? and how many of those sweet lil pacifist 'lefties' are all too ready to get all skeered of the big bad Iran and bomb them? all too many.

I was for the quick strike in Afghanistan to take out the Taliban and elements of AQ, then to leave. Americans were gung ho to do more.

I never bought into Iraq. what was it... 95% were into it? hankering for it?

here we are now.

now I believe in working out a plan for Afghanistan but I am somehow seen as 'outside of the tribe". whatever. I was happy to be outside of the tribe when it was in a blood lust after Iraq. And I am happy to be so now.

we created a situation. we have a responsibility. I think it is as simple as that.
