There's nothing more peaceful than a calm sea, light wind, clear skies and only the sound of the water lapping up against the boat and the wind in the sails

that actually makes very much sense. It's how I feel in the woods. especially at twilight when things get oddly still... you just sit and now and then feel the sound of a leaf falling, or a critter stepping softly on a path. all very calm, unless the sound is a slither.

I raised sheep for a couple of years and a fellow from the flatlands of south alabama came to buy some. he was so anxious to get out of the holler, he said. needed to get back to where he could see more than 30 yards before a hill rose up in front of him...

which I think is part of what is disconcerting to me now about the sea... I love vistas, I love the notion of it... but there is an element of a new remarkable experience of seeing so far.
