At Pearl had the Japanese hung around and finished the job by taking out our carriers we would have had no choice but to sue for peace right then and there. There would have been nothing to stop them from coming right to the west coast.

As I understand it, a large motivation for Japan's conquest of the Pacific was to ensure they had access to oil.
