Submarine patents were largely eliminated in 1996, when the US adopted a patent term of 20 years from filing, rather than 17 from issuance.

Patents do not protect you from suits, since they do not grant affirmative rights to practice an invention. Rather, they allow you to prevent others from practicing your invention. Of course, having a patent does preclude others from getting such a patent and harassing you, which is maybe what you meant.
