The second half tonight with Rogan, Oxford author of "The Arabs" and Stephen Cohen noted author and expert on the Middle East was also very interesting and quite good too. It repeats on some PBS stations and can I believe be seen via Rose's web site at some later date.

>>> Friedman on Charlie Rose on my PBS station right now...worth watching.

It was just one more instance of self-promotion out of TF.

I deleted it halfway through.

His view, his "#1 Rule", that "it has to start with THEM, and that will make it a success" is silly. He argues Anbar "started with them", but of course, it didn't. The surge wasn't some sideline enabler; it was a very specific strategic approach to solving a tough problem, and it worked.

He did make a good point that GWB was able to oust the Taliban with, what, 500 special forces guys -- so why are we now needing 10s of thousands. It isn't because of the Northern Alliance, though. It is because we have no leadership at the top and they know it.

McLaughlin was much more on target with Afghanistan tonight that TLF was.
