I'll simply note that Krugman says Dean Baker has looked at those numbers and has lots of questions. An ongoing debate.

But the Krugman point that interested me was more about the timing of the piece. It could have been written sometime back. Nothing inherent in the piece that dictates it come out now. So, he suggests, the timing might be dictated by the fact that federal programs to decrease unemployment are beginning to get traction.
