I'm well aware of the difference between AQ & the Taliban. The fact remains they were allies, and the Taliban defended them, even after 9/11. Thats a problem. If the Taliban take over again, they will again be a source of trouble with AQ or the next flavor of the decade.

Unfortunately, massive threat does not seem to work against these guys. If we were to nuke them down the road, it would likely simply ensure that the USA will get nuked at some point as well, and plenty of people will cheer it on.

The solutions are not easy.
