That is the most intelligent post I've read in a long time. More than anything I've been lamenting the dumbing down of America. It's like we're this spoiled country with not enough education, too much superstition, celebrity infatuated, conspiracy theorist, and arrogant, all at the same time. No wonder these followers don't have the ability to come together for the common purpose of remaking the US for the 21st century and beyond. We're caught in last century's wars and last century's image of ourselves. We're living in the past as the present and future crumble.

Nice point. And a terrific Lincoln quote.

This cracked me up- since at the time Lincoln was president the country was -literally- fractured.

I think our culture is less fractured now that it used to be. Remember the great fractures based on national identity? "No dogs or Irish"? No blacks allowed? No Jews? These fractures are healing. What is left is, imo, more trivial. That is not to say there are not crazy people out there on the edges militating for fractures- but let's have some perspective. We've come a long way since the Civil War- a long way for the better.
