The "array of disparate perspectives" about which the author complains is not a bad thing. It's not bug - it's a feature. This is what makes us strong and successful. When "Pluribus" is not preserved, "Unum" becomes a dictatorship.

There is no greater achievement than (relative) peace and prosperity. Sometimes, wishing for "great" leaders is the same as asking for.... interesting times.

A hard lefty in-law of mine says we need a strong leader to step up and assume dictatorial (benevolent of course) powers in order to get anything done.
