...I was sent this great .gif of a cartoon from the "Economist" explaining the recent market selloff....

it starts out with a broker talking about a stock that could excel....

then it drifts to "excel?"

then "Sell?

then "Sell, sell, sell"

Then a broker saying "I cannot take this anymore, good bye"

"good bye?"

"Good buy?"

"Buy....BUY...BUY"

whadda country.

Interesting point. If you are talking about long term, perhaps you should use as an example the period of late 1968 to 1982. This is an almost 15-year period in which the market declined.
