The substance abusers feelings about themselves are the only ones that matter. Whether someone shows scorn, sympathy or empathy matters little until the person is ready for change.

You view substance use as coping mechanisms is destructive IMO. Most counseling I see on this shows that people need to learn to cope without addictive substances. Perhaps some medications should be prescribed while bridging through to learn new behaviors. But a life time of coping with mind altering substances is very destructive for many people. I am not talking about schizophrenics, but more for dealing with depression, anxiety, etc.

My view is that most people have learned their view on life by how they choose to view things. I believe President Lincoln said something to the effect that people are only as happy as they choose to be.

If people have not been taught or given permission during their formative years to 'cry over spilt milk'--namely grieve and mourn losses, then their is a greater propensity to substance abuse during times of crises. Men in our culture have more difficulty with this as it is not 'macho' to cry. One needs to 'suck it up' and get on with ones life. One can do that externally but unresolved grief doesn't just go away and it takes more and more energy to keep it buried. Thus Drugs, Alcohol, etc...
