Public policy to cope with 'assholes' in and around Government: Since you have accurately pointed out the universal propensity, given the right circumstances for everyone to be an asshole, the only control is a government of law that has teeth in it and follow through and not run according to the designs of whomever is in power. That means hovering over the health insurance, Wall street, and pharm folks like a hawk with all their talons in place. Also giving these non-poor folks a chance to be in prison and find 'God". Does God help people not get raped in prison or does he care about prison behavior? Having worked in a prison, and knowing several 'wolves', they don't spend a lot of time ruminating about their bad behavior or the suffering of their victims. Do one think Madoff is feeling guilty right now? If one does, then they must believe in Santa Claus, and the elves. (I am not speaking about you, Dale. I know you only believe in elves. <g>)

I have had the distinct honor of knowing several psychopaths. They can lie to your face. Tell you the check it in the mail. Have you drive to places to retrieve it all on the most honest basis. They even hold positions like Madoff did where a lot of respect is gleaned. So much so that the SEC didn't even really look into his financial matters. Unfortunately I only learned about these types after I had retired . Up until then I gave a builder power of attorney to build me a home in the Virgin Islands and I got what I wanted. Trust was something I was reared with and it was very very hard on my psychic to find that there were so many psychopaths out there ready to lie to your face, print out letterheads that had a fake business address.... register their fake company in Delaware which can be done over the phone. What messes I got myself into by believing in certain people.
