Its not competing for the same funds as defense. The fact that you structure one form of tax to take out of payroll, and another to come out of reported income, doesn't mean your not competing for the same money. All government spending has to be supported from the same economy. True but it means SS is not competing directly with other spending.......it has its own source of funding. However, defense IS competing with other budgetary items for funds from a finite funding source, and the more money that goes for defense, the less there is for other budget items like infrastructure. That's how this country has been screwing itself and its starting to show......like the bridge collapse in MPLS.
