Well-we all got burned by the real estate of the early 80s--
We bought our first house for 53,000 in 1980 and sold it three years later for 73,000-- and thought, WOW! This is easy! So then we bought for 150, and that's the one that we had to rent for the last few years after we moved becuase the value had so declined I couldn't stand the thought of the loss --finally sold a few months ago for 118,000 when the thought of staying a landlady any longer made me throw up at night. So I can understand Alexa's horror at change.
Times are just different and that doesn't always work in your favor.
Dan's favorite expression besides "Moderation in all things" is "Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you."
