"but duty propels me to at least to pretend to some vision of sunshine...

I am completely beside you Pollyanna, I'm the one holding Diogenes Lamp.

>>but now... we do actaully 'allow' wickons to survive in this country. we haven't wiped out a whole race of people in awhile.

No one survives. The goal is not to survive but to live life well, to live a worthy life. Is it worth it? What makes it worth it?

>>and as a world we do, mostly, stand up and notice when genocides are happening and try to do something. is that not progress as humans?

A bunch of Samalis were helped by some folk in a town near here to come with refugie status. Then one of them comes to me and complains that they brandish machette style weapons at the drop of a hat. OK, says I, you invited people who've experienced brutality and slaughter throughout their lives because they ethnically or culturally offended the powerful guys in their home land. They've never known another way, they haven't even seen another way on TV. A place where 16 year olds have become the only successful people by captaining a crew of pirates, and rule over the starving masses. You/we represent power here and when you get in their face, you expect what kind of reaction? And now you want someone to do something about it right, just not you? Right.

Well that doesn't answer your question. Progress is the name of the game we all play from one generation to the next and every generation argues that they are achieving it. I know you don't want me to upset your apple cart, so I wont.
