Finally managed to sign up for Medicare D; the guy I met with yesterday basically told me to "call this number", which I already had, so I wasted an hour in the car.
Today, called the insurance company directly. Got thru pretty quickly, but then the guy said "I need to transfer you to a California registered agent, and hang on"...got disconnected after about 15 minutes.
Then called 1800Medicare. "All our agents are...Hello, my name is". In and out "the door" in about 5 minutes, and she is sending me forms for electronic deposit of my SS check, to boot. So much for the superiority of the private sector.

She told me it went a lot faster cuz I didn't walk thru the door with meds. Sometimes new enrollees bring 25 meds with them.
