hello seeker, we are fortunate, for while we have two TVs, complete with all-channels cable/internet TV subscriptions of a whole lot of stations from all around the world, as well as DVD accessories and solid-state digital recording for program time-shifting, erita, since the beginning, has not allowed us to watch the machines and only uses the contraptions to watch 1 hour of winnie the bear once every 4 weeks.

she loves to read, in both english and chinese, and then read some more, when not drawing or practicing on the piano, or bicycling or playing with her friends.

we are blessed.

OT on TV:

I have a sister who when her children were about 10, 8, and 6 years old, took a pair of scissors and cut off the cord from the TV. There was much discontent and withdrawal symptoms, but gradually they got used to no TV.

Two of them are now doctors, though it's a mystery to me how their way got paid through medical school. The third is a geologist and a science writer. All are married to good people and are raising their own families. Evidently the absence of TV was not much of a hindrance.

I grew up with a TV and even now enjoy talking with my brothers about the small black and white box we watched cartoons on. Later, with color, we woke up early Saturday morning waiting for the color bars to be replaced by Tom n Jerry. Then there was the chance to watch legends like the Bruins Esposito play for the Stanley Cup with the family. Also, missing school to watch the Apollo liftoffs...priceless!

So now, homeless and living out of a ditch, I realize the evil that TV represented. (kidding)

In all honesty, though, TV is probably the least of our worries as parents concerned about the inputs to our children. TV is just an entertainment medium, and we can hardly see it for what it is while in the middle of it. I guess if it were 400 years ago the same TV banning parents would tell their children to stay away from that Globe theatre and those dastardly Shakespeare plays and go out to the park!

For example, one input far more worrisome (based on the hours per year) is school. For us school time is about 7x the TV time. My current beef is the bile they get fed about Climate Change at school. If my daughter asks teacher about the temperature of earth when the dinosaurs lived she gets no response. I spend more than 30 minutes daily trying to undo the damage.

Another input is the food we eat where even organic food is laden with lots of salt...good luck dieting since salt causes the cells to increase water retention. Mummies in Egypt show heart disease from the salt they used to preserve food yet we have learnt nothing it seems.

Of course these are just two inputs, but food and education are pretty big in my opinion.

If you dont like TV just turn it off! Now try and go to the local store and find soup or canned sauce without salt or tell me the average schoolchild has access to local education that isn't just part of the PR machine for the nation.
