But we can never cut back on this monstrosity if modifying it is considered out of order.

Fortunately the move doesn't have any constitutional backing, or even the backing of long tradition like the filibuster, so it can probably be gotten around, waived, or repealed if the circumstances are ever favorable. Unfortunately, expansions of government tend to be tricky for political reasons, the one hope here is that since most of the taxes kick in right away and most of the spending doesn't start for three to five years, it might be possible to repeal or seriously modify the plan if its done soon enough, but some problematic parts kick in right away (such as the insurance companies being required to cover essentially everyone, insuring people after they already have conditions which the insurance company will have to pay for treatment of.)

"I'm sympathetic to what they're trying to do. We will never save any money if folks scream "death panel" for every attempt at rationing, cable news picks it up, and congress votes to override. "

Every method of providing health care involves some kind of rationing. Insurance companies do it by a contract that sets out what they cover or don't cover.

The problem with the rationing in the health care bill is they are trying to hide what they are doing. Death Panels is an apt description. They will make decisions such as when you get mammagrams, or if certain medecines will be available that will result in the death of certain people.

I can't understand why they just won't disccuss what they are going to and how they intend to do it before they pass the law. But then again why should we expect honesty from them now. Never got it before.
