Agree but the US airlines have completely walked away from providing a comfortable flying experience for those willing to spend extra. I would pay but aren't given the opportunity.

Current business class gives you a larger seat and a free drink for twice the cost.

The Asian airlines understand their market much better and provide it. Economy class on Singapore Airlines is better than any class of service provided by American, Delta and United. I'm not sure a US airline could provide the level of service that Singapore Business class offers.

When was the last time a young, polite "cute" lady put slippers on your feet at American while refilling your drink? Do they even have flight attendents younger than 50 in business class?

OT/ You are right, and corporate travel desks did not help - they almost always went for the lowest price.

Airline crowding - One thing that has increased crowding - jet engines have become more powerful and fuel efficient.

Early jets had less powerful engines, so they limited the load by keeping the seats far apart and limiting the weight of cargo. You may also remember weight limits on luggage.

The early jets would use a lot of runway to get airborne, and would have to drop passengers on hot days. Some even had water injection to increase take off thrust.

As the engines became more powerful, more passengers could be added, and the seats could be moved closer together to take more passengers.

As the engines became more fuel efficient, the planes could carry less fuel and more people.
