We only give gifts to children in my family, makes Christmas a lot easier. I got absolutely nothing for Christmas other than the blu ray player I bought myself.

OT - Many "Christian" rituals or traditions are leftovers from other religions and pagans.

The Christmas tree is a leftover from druids and others who celebrated the winter solstice. In fact the date for Christmas was moved near the winter solstice to compete with a number of celebrations that took place at that time, as Jesus was actually born in spring or summer.

Rabbits and eggs are ancient fertility symbols, which coincides with the fact that Easter is a renewal celebration that happens in the Spring.

I took a class in college that compared the major religions (not just christianity). When you look broadly at them, they are simply variations on a common theme. And many of their rituals have roots that predate the religions themselves.

humans are very, very strange creatures.

The curse of man, and cause of nearly all of his woes, is his stupendous capacity for believing the incredible.

~ H L Mencken, A Mencken Chrestomathy (1949)

but the most unbelievable of all tall tales are those told by the United States Congress...

these tales and promises can defy mathematics, logic, and simple decency...

"It is Tertullian who is credited with the motto, Credo, quia absurdum est: I believe because it is incredible. Needless to say, he began life as a lawyer."

~ Mencken

Over the weekend, we viewed old photo slides of Christmases from 30 & 40 years past. The oldsters in the room, those mid-60's and over, got all misty-eyed. They pointed to the mountains of presents under the trees in the photos as evidence that Christmas used to mean so much more.

Man, I'd forgotten how much loot we used to give/get. I come from a smallish family and the kids would each get 10-20 presents of varying sizes. The greatest shopping burden fell on the parents. Every year they'd sputter, "This is it! Next year we're cutting way back."

Never happened until I went off to college.

Can you imagine shopping for, purchasing and wrapping 10(+) gifts each for a couple kids plus another couple each for your spouse and dozen or so extended family members? I get a materialistic hangover just having to re-visit that period through photos. It's no wonder X-mas has changed. People are like foie grois. Not only do they not need any more, they can't TAKE any more.

I don't know too many people who explicitly equate X-mas with Jesus anymore, either. I think the holiday has been pushed so far over the top by marketers that it might be mutilated beyond redemption. Finally.... <G?>

"but some just can't seem to grasp the concept. "

It's a 'marketing ploy/gimmic' : peer pressure.

Not going to buy a Lexus/BMW every freaking Xmas, of course,
these are reserved for the elites, the woods, like hollywood,
tigerwood, ... bollywood...

AWESOME.
