Anyone else wondering a few things about this plot...like why Detroit? How many Muslims live there?

A. Detroit is a major gateway for Northwest flights;
B. Lots of Muslims live in SE Michigan, especially in Dearborn.

Why leave from Amsterdam? What was he doing in Amsterdam?

See A, above. What are the other choices? Lufthansa out of Frankfurt? Better security maybe. Fly out of Paris? better security maybe. Heathrow is out since he was refused entry into Britain.

Why take a flight to Detroit? What was the significance of that?

See A, above.

Also, a flight into Kennedy would have possibly involved an approach over water. More terror effect detonating over land.

Was he trying to take out Muslims who lived in Detroit if the plane exploded in the air, or if it caught on fire, and landed on a neighborhood?

Doubt that very much. I fly into Detroit Metro a fair amount and the approaches vary.

What other flights leave from Amsterdam to the US?

Kayak shows quite a few. Into Detroit you have United, SAS, KLM, Lufthansa and a variety more. I'd think he and his handlers wanted a nonstop flight. The only nonstop flights to Detroit. are on Delta and KLM.

What I'd like to know is more about the Passport issue. There was the report that the "well dressed man" assisting Underwear Man in the Netherlands said he didn't have a passport. Every time I've flown international I have been required to check in and show my passport. Due to the Schengen treaty, Underpants would not have had any passport control once in the EU. He still should not have been permitted to board a plane to the US without a valid passport.

I suspect he took the flight to Detroit because, as a muslim, he wouldn't have stood out from most of the other passengers and was less likely to be pulled aside for a secondary search.

Why leave from Amsterdam? What was he doing in Amsterdam? Was he in Yemen or Narobi before Amsterdam?

I think he flew from the UAE (??) to Amsterdam on KLM, then onto Detroit on Northwest. Northwest and KLM are airline partners, and their US destination flights which originate in the UAE all go through Amsterdam. I've taken the same flight a few times when I lived in the UAE.

Is Northwest personnel the most lax in Amsterdam? Or are the other airlines leaving from there any better or worse?

They were pretty serious in 2002, since then there wasn't much inspection for in transit passengers in Amsterdam. The place to catch this guy is when he originally boarded the plane. And the UAE has always been lax (based on my experience) in checking out passengers. Flights from Vegas to San Francisco have a lot more inspection than international flights out of the UAE.

And why no passport? After all..........he had a visa and had flown to the U.S. before.
