As late as the middle 60s, all phones in the hamlet we lived in in the San Bernardino Mountains went through a central phone - with extensions. You could pick up the phone at any time and listen to whatever conversation was going on and even join in. Everyone knew what everyone was doing.

Into the 80s, Catalina Island still had a central switchboard that all calls went through.
