TJ should have bought garlic... <G>

Garlic prices soar in China amid flu fears

As H1N1 swine flu continues to worry China's leaders — who are rolling out a nationwide vaccine program — its people seek a more traditional remedy. Just as some Chinese turned to turnips to prevent the SARS virus in 2003, garlic has emerged as a swine flu fighter in 2009.

"Garlic kills bacteria, and I eat at least half a bulb each day," says Liu, 43, whose prices have leapt from just five cents a pound in February to almost 55 cents today.

The real winners appear to be speculators such as Shao Mingqing, a jobless 22-year-old who borrowed money to buy 100 tons of garlic in September, then made a $59,000 profit selling in October, the state-run China Daily reports. He now drives a $26,360 Toyota, it says.

Like, say palladium?

Diversification is good, no question.

And if you are comfortable and knowledgeable in those markets,
great for you.

From my perception all involve counterparty risk, currency risk, and country risk... so I am less comfortable with something I cannot own & control and have IMHO insufficient knowledge regarding...

Just a personal comfort level thing.

Be well, happy 10.

hello haim, i cannot honestly see myself altruistically recommend to mom, pop, j6p, or anyone not watching the screens 24/7/52 to engage with any of the 'assets' to named, namely <<Brazilian Debentures? or Turkish debt or Russian debt.... or the list I posted>>

if the objective was to simply engage with wagers <<all performed mush better than gold>>, i would have recommended garlic. but, of course, the objective is to bet sure, wager safe, gamble in size, and collect deservedly, without losing sleep, and for that, nothing beats gold, or, as you noted, GOLD.

and so as i noted Message 26213383

<< i just tallied my domestic helper's savings a/c under management with me. we pay her extra 2 month's pay every 12 months, but into a/c she cannot give away to wastrel relatives.

her a/c was invested 50/50 in pure gold and solid platinum at end of 2007, is up 69% during 2008, and her current year bonus will be split 50/50 in pure silver and solid gold

i do not charge her the customary 1/10 or the more usual 2/20, because both seem too much for the effort of keeping simple faith ;0) >>

and so i would not put coconut's nanny's savings into any of the items you had listed. for her, just gold, silver, and platinum, in calibrated balance, a bouquet, a cocktail, of goodness. keeping it all so simple, fuss free, and expense light.

one thing to note, while i may speak well of gold, praise platinum, and cheer silver, i do not denigrate portfolio choices of others, because each to his own.

however, i do recommend getgold ;0)

cheers, tj
