The problem with trains in this country is the roadbeds. The tracks have not been kept up to the point where you can run 100+ mph trains. It's been some years since I rode the Amtrak Metroliner between DC and NYC, but in the day (1980s) the trains at max would go about 80 mph due to poor condition of the roadbed.

As I've posted before, I really enjoyed using the trains in Italy. Wish on some level we could emulate those trains here.
