MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1997--Delivering on a continued commitment to providing manageable PCs for the business enterprise, NEC's Computer Systems Division (CSD) today announced the availability of the PowerMate Enterprise Net PC.

An addition to the PowerMate Enterprise line of Managed PC systems for the networked business environment, the PowerMate Enterprise Net PC is a centrally-configured and managed, commercial client-side desktop with a small footprint.

"NEC has developed the PowerMate Net PC based upon customer demand for a solution that enables them to perform task-oriented functions in a distributed computing environment," said Cliff Apsey, NEC director of product marketing. "The PowerMate Enterprise Net PC rounds out NEC's open standards-based Enterprise line of PowerMate managed PCs for commercial computing."

Featuring enhanced management, network and security features, the NEC Net PC is targeted at Windows-based distributed computing environments that require the execution of task-focused applications, but that do not require the full expandability of a standard desktop PC. The NEC Net PC delivers control and management to large organizations that require MIS support. These organizations typically include vertical markets, such as Banking or Financial, Retail, Education, Medical, Government, and Customer Service/Support. System Compatibility for Ease of Integration

NEC's PowerMate Net PC supports several standards-based initiatives, to ensure compatibility and interoperability in a networked computing environment. The NEC PowerMate Net PC supports both Microsoft's Zero Administration for Windows (ZAW) and Intel's Wired for Management (WfM) initiatives. A recognized pioneer in DMI, NEC has included support for DMI 2.0 in the PowerMate Net PC, for remote management and monitoring functionality.

"NEC has long been a proponent of providing extensive manageability solutions that deliver a lower total cost of ownership to the corporate computing environment," said Pat Gelsinger, vice president and general manager, Desktop Products Group, Intel Corporation. "With the availability of the new NEC Net PCs based on the Intel Wired for Management Baseline Specification, users will have even more options in interoperable, manageable, systems."

"The PowerMate Net PC line is a solid example of NEC's continued commitment to reducing costs and improving manageability for our mutual enterprise customers," said Rich Tong, vice president, Personal Business Systems Group, Microsoft Corporation. "With Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and the Zero Administration Kit for Windows, the PowerMate Net PC offers a secure, highly manageable reliable solution."

Open Standards for Greater Flexibility

The NEC PowerMate Net PC operates with Microsoft's Distributed Computing Development Environment and the Object Management Group's Common Object Request Broker (CORBA) distributed architecture solutions, for enhanced interoperability and compatibility.

Desktop management on the Net PC is provided by Intel's LANDesk(R) Client Manager 3.1, for remote desktop management and hardware/software monitoring. NEC's PowerMate Net PC also includes a wide range of software solutions featuring both management tools and fault prevention.

Configurations of the PowerMate Enterprise Net PC support Microsoft Windows(R) 95 and Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0, both familiar platforms for the end user. To further reduce MIS hassles, the PowerMate Net PC features NEC's MagicEye technology, which monitors system temperature and voltage and detects chassis intrusion. The system also includes CyberMedia's First Aid 97 Deluxe for crash prevention, and McAfee's VirusScan and WebScan for local and Internet virus protection.

Net PC System Configurations

The NEC PowerMate Net PC is based on the Intel 166 MHz and 200 MHz Pentium processors with MMX(TM) technology. The NEC PowerMate Enterprise Net PCs offer 16MB or 32MB of SDRAM expandable to 256MB, and feature hard drive capacities of 2.0GB or3.2GB standard (up to 6.4GB), with 2MB of SGRAM from the S3 Virge GX video graphics controller. The NEC Net PCs feature the Intel Ether Express(TM) Pro/100 Management Adapter with Wake-On LAN technology and Intel's LAN Desk Client Manager. The NEC Net PCs occupy a small footprint of approximately 8.5 by 10 by 3 inches and run on Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 operating systems.

Additional features of the PowerMate Net PC include:

- Remote boot of profile applications
- Sealed chassis
- Auto back-up and virus protection software
- Low power consumption
- Security enhancement through lock-down procedure and
centrally-controlled personal profile assignments

Benefits of Duo View

If any of you ever did any road presentations using a portable computer and an LCD projector, you know how screwed up the whole process is.

Half the time, you hope the mish mash system you have going doesn't die in the middle of the presentation, or your order doesn't get messed up or there are no questions that make you try to do an "out of order" file reference.

Its really hard to try to access some information out of order.

this is why duo view is so great, because you can FIND the file, and Get the file using your original laptop screen, then display it through your 2nd connection to the LCD projector.

IMO NEC and Toshiba are really smart (rilly!) by incorporating MX into their designs. It fits the needs for onsultants/ salespeople/ roadshows almost perfectly.

Trio3D is pretty neat product. you can see that 25-35% of all PC's will be <$1000 units. but the $22/10,000 price is BS. More like $15 with a 10% reduction per quarter. S3 has a majority of this market (my estimate around 65%-70%) because if its relationship with Taiwan board manufacturers. so guesstimating...(0.35*110 million computers *$12 avg 12 mo. selling price * 0.70 market share = $323 million) this is obviously a high end estimate. cut it in half to be realistic/pessimistic.

Note, $12 is WAAAayyy above the current selling price of Trio. You can buy a Trio board for about $29-39 right now i'd guess they are selling around $5-7. (See $120mm Q3 revenue, and 12 mm estimated unit sales = $10 average selling price, including the MX/GX/DX products)

obviously a product transition phase for S3 and board manufacturers.

Lots of low end boxes filled with S3 boards.
so, this is S3's assurance it will not die next year. it might bleed cash, lose money, etc. but it won't die.
