The Soviet Union collapsed of it's own weight.

Providing our jihadi army with stinger missiles, CIA advisers, and billions in cash has bought us far more trouble than it caused the Russians.

Reagan liked to take credit for the fact that he was President of the US around during the time when the Soviet system creaked to a halt. Much like the Peter Sellers film "Being There" events happened in spite of him.

Pakistan did nothing except to gulp merrily all the moolah that uncle Sam gave them. ISI and their army strengthened by the largesse and all resources were diverted to counteract India. US has been suckered by Pakistani generals time and again.
