Intel Releases 971 PC Camera Kit For Production Of Affordable,
Easy-To-Use, Portable PC Cameras

Includes New Intel CMOS Image Sensor

CHANDLER, Ariz., Nov. 3, 1997 -
Manufacturers will now be able to
produce affordable, easy-to-use,
portable PC cameras. Today, Intel
Corporation announced its 971 PC
Camera Kit for manufacturers, which
includes Intel PC camera silicon,
software, schematics, design
documentation and suggested
manufacturing procedures. The 971 PC
Camera Kit can be utilized by
manufacturers to produce affordable,
easy-to-use, quick time-to-market,
portable PC cameras for home and
business users.

"Intel wants to make digital imaging a
simple, compelling experience for the
home and business PC user. Leading
manufacturers can use the Intel 971 PC
Camera Kit to accelerate the production
of affordable, easy-to-use portable PC
cameras that complement a variety of
PC-based imaging software," said Peter
Green, general manager of Intel's Digital Peripherals Division (DPD). "The
combination of portable PC cameras and today's high-performance PCs
powered by Intel Pentiumr II processors will make PC Imaging fast,
affordable, easy and fun."

Intel 971 PC Camera Kit Components and Capabilities

Key Intel components of the 971 PC Camera Kit include Intel's new
CMOS Image Sensor,
imaging processing unit, microcontroller and PC
Imaging utility software. The image sensing unit, Intel's integrated CMOS
Image Sensor, is an affordable alternative to existing image sensing
devices. The image processing unit interfaces with the CMOS sensor,
DRAM memory and camera I/O circuits in order to perform specialized
imaging tasks. While images are temporarily stored in DRAM during
processing, the removable flash memory card serves as the electronic
film.

The Intel 971 PC Camera Kit also includes PC Imaging utility software that
performs general image acquisition and storage tasks on the host PC.
These tasks include decompressing the images and conversion to the
FlashPix* file format. Once stored in the FlashPix file format, the images
may be enhanced through the use of various imaging software, such as
Storm EasyPhoto* software, MGI Software* PhotoSuite software and
Microsoft PictureIt!* software.

Portable PC cameras that incorporate all of the features available in the
Intel 971 PC Camera Kit offer many compelling features, including:

Dual-mode operation -- able to capture a digital still image when
detached from the PC (portable mode) and capture digital video
when attached to the PC via the Universal Serial Bus (USB)
(connected mode).
768x576 maximum pixel resolution
Camera support of 16.7 million colors (24-bit)
High-speed communication with PC over USB
Image storage on removable Flash Miniature Cards (up to 64 MB
capacity)

Portable PC Camera Building Block Technology

The Intel 971 PC Camera Kit follows the recommendations outlined in
Intel's Portable PC Camera '98 Design Guideline for the third-party
development of low-cost, easy-to-use PC cameras. Recommended
portable PC camera building block technologies include the FlashPix File
Format, USB, removable flash memory card (example: Intel Flash
Miniature Card) and use of the Intel Pentium II processor. The guideline is
supported by numerous imaging- and computer- technology companies,
including Hewlett-Packard Company and Microsoft.

Product Manufacturers and Technology Providers

Aztech Systems Ltd., Lite-On Technology Corp. and Samsung Aerospace
Industries, Ltd. have plans to manufacture portable PC cameras using the
Intel 971 PC Camera Kit.

Storm Technology, Inc., is providing a customized version of Easy Photo
based on its newly released version 2.7. Easy Photo is a photo gallery
application that catalogues pictures like an electronic photo album. Easy
Photo will interface with the Flash miniature card and camera software in
the Intel 971 PC Camera Kit. Images can then be downloaded in a single
step from the portable PC camera to the PC.
