It's been true since WWII. People who defend the spending will claim that we spend about the same % of our GDP as other countries, which is also true, but OUR country is THAT MUCH richer and has that much of a larger GDP than all other countries.

We spend as if we believe the entire world will rise up against us. Seeing that we have trouble in pissant countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, I'd say the bulk of the funds are totally wasted on expensive toys.
