"A huge mass of people in the middle who were suddenly excited by politics again, are about to hit the MUTE button and go back to ignoring all the Beltway clowns and their antics."

I think you can take that even one worse. The folks who excited (and who now will be turned off) probably tend to be averse to Fox-style histrionics, accusations, venom and constant appeal to fear and the lowest-common denominator. Who in their right mind wouldn't avoid that circus?

What's left will be akin to a gene pool re-populated by bullies and finger pointers.

I agree. It was a squandered opportunity. I'm not sure either side of the aisle is able to get beyond partisanship to really make anything of the future. It's too bad- but both political parties pretty much suck at the far extremes, and they don't seem to be able to compromise the way they once did over the territory in the middle- and when they do compromise, it's a mess of special interest glop.

Thanks to the supreme court supporting the "freedom" of corporations to buy elections, I'd say it will be even worse in the future. Considering the founders didn't even want to give all people the right to vote, I wonder how the fools on the supreme court figured it squared with original intent to do what they did. Maybe the block of Supremes who voted for that are bought and paid for too.
