I've been trying to think of the right metaphor for where American politics stands. At first I considered a seesaw with the dominant weight going back and forth between the two ends. But that implies a stable central fulcrum, which is gone from our politics today.

The more appropriate image is a grossly overcrowded passenger ferry where the herd keeps running from port to starboard and back in a blind stampede, forcing the ship to weave wildly but make very little real forward progress.

I like the metaphor work here but, as you know, I'm not an equal opportunity, pax on both their houses, citizen. While the Dems are hardly blameless and my list of their faults could go on longer than either of us would like, I think there's little doubt that the principle culprits are the Reps. I'm not going to rehearse all the reasons. But I my summary line is that, since Gingrich took over the House Rep leadership, the party as a whole (with the exception of those around GWHB) were interested in power rather than policy. In a two party system, with 24/7 communication, etc., that's deadly.

I'm not nearly as good with metaphors as you are but I'll work on it. Once I get past tomorrow.
